actually gold is a mineral, ore is the rock and other material in which the mineral is found. for much of history gold was valued for pretty & rarity. Now gold has more practical uses than before, making it much more valuable than it ever was. That being said I have never subscribed to some of the almost mystical/ magical properties attributed to gold as currency.
